How Long Should a YouTube Video Be: Limits and How to Decide

There is no single figure that works for every channel: to know how long a YouTube video should be, YouTube itself advises that the length should suit the content and that you use audience retention data to fine-tune it. What is fixed are the limits: 15 minutes if you have not verified the channel, 256 GB or 12 hours at most, up to 3 minutes for a Short, and 8 minutes to be able to turn on mid-roll ads if you monetise it.
Why there is no ideal length
Because YouTube does not give one. In its performance FAQ (in Spanish) it puts it this way: it wants both short and long videos to succeed, so the advisable thing is for the length to suit the content.
The same answer gives a useful clue. The discovery system is based on absolute and relative watch time, and broadly speaking relative time matters more for short videos and absolute time for longer ones. In YouTube Studio metrics terms:
- Relative time: how much of the video is watched, the average percentage viewed. It weighs more for short videos.
- Absolute time: how many minutes are watched, the average view duration. It weighs more for longer ones.
That is why you should distrust any “ideal length” with exact minutes that does not say where it comes from. A twenty-minute video that is watched in full and a six-minute one that people abandon halfway are not fixed by the same rule.
The official limits, in one table
| Limit | What YouTube's help says |
|---|---|
| Without verifying the channel | By default, videos with a maximum length of 15 minutes. |
| With a verified account | You can upload videos longer than 15 minutes. |
| Maximum per file | 256 GB or 12 hours of total length, whichever is less. |
| Shorts | Up to 3 minutes, with a square or vertical aspect ratio. |
| End screen | The video must be at least 25 seconds long. |
| Chapters | At least three timestamps, the first at 00:00, and no chapter shorter than 10 seconds. |
| Mid-roll ads | On monetised videos of 8 minutes or more. |
| Key moments for audience retention | The video must be at least 60 seconds long and have at least 100 views. |
The 15-minute limit can be fixed: it is lifted by verifying the channel with a phone number, as we explain in how to verify a YouTube channel.
Length and monetisation
Length is not a requirement to join the YouTube Partner Program: the thresholds are measured in subscribers and in watch hours or Shorts views. According to YouTube's help, you need 1000 subscribers and 4000 valid watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1000 subscribers and 10 million valid Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Two caveats that do have to do with length:
- Which hours count. Valid hours are those from long-form videos set to public; hours from private, unlisted or deleted videos do not count, and neither do those from Shorts watched in the Shorts feed towards the 4000-hour threshold.
- Mid-video ads. On monetised videos of 8 minutes or more you can turn on mid-roll ads. Even so, ads are not guaranteed to be shown in those slots, and those placed at natural transitions, such as pauses in the audio or changes of image, are more likely to show them.
Our view: do not stretch a video just to get past 8 minutes; if the content does not stretch that far, the padding will show in the retention. What the policies ask for in order to monetise an AI-made channel is covered in monetising a YouTube channel with AI.
How to decide the length by format
The useful question is not how many minutes, but how much the idea needs to deliver what the title promises. Some guidelines of our own:
| Format | What sets the length |
|---|---|
| Short | A single idea, no introduction. The ceiling is 3 minutes, but there is no need to get close to it. |
| Explainer | The time it takes to answer the question in the title, with an example. Everything else goes in another video. |
| Story or documentary | The arc of the narrative: set-up, development and resolution. It can hold more minutes if each section adds something new, and chapters help viewers find their way around. |
| List or compilation | How many items genuinely hold up. Seven good ones beat ten with filler. |
To go from an idea to minutes, count words. For example, a history channel preparing a video about a bridge: if the script holds up at about 1,200 words and is narrated at about 150 a minute, the benchmark the Estudio de Canales uses for narration in Spanish, it will come to about 8 minutes. If reaching the 12 you wanted means adding paragraphs that contribute nothing, the video is 8 minutes. Cutting a weak section is almost always a better idea than speeding up the voice-over. How to structure that script is explained in how to write a YouTube script.
How to fine-tune it with retention
Length is refined by looking at how your videos are watched. YouTube recommends using audience retention data to discover how long your viewers are willing to watch content, and adjusting the length accordingly.
- Open the report. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, choose the video and open Analytics; the “Audience retention” report is in Overview or in Engagement. It exists only at video level, and its data takes 1 to 2 days to process.
- Compare with videos of a similar length. With “See more” you compare your video with all YouTube videos of similar length, and typical retention compares your last 10 videos of a similar length.
- Read the shape of the curve. A gradual decline means people lose interest over time, and as a general rule every video has some decline. Dips point to parts that are skipped or where people stop watching.
- Look at the first 30 seconds. The introduction shows what percentage of the audience is still watching after them. If it is low, YouTube suggests changing the thumbnail and title so that they better reflect the content, or changing those first few seconds.
If the videos in a format always lose people at the same point, that section is not needed or belongs somewhere else. The metrics and how to read them without fooling yourself are in YouTube metrics.
Length in the Estudio de Canales
In the Estudio de Canales the length is decided before writing and checked when editing:
- Target length. It is set in the channel bible in minutes, from 1 to 180, and each series can have its own in seconds. When an idea is planned, the video takes its series' length or, if it has none, the bible's.
- A script made to measure. The script is requested to fit that length, with a benchmark of about 150 words per minute for Spanish narration at a documentary pace.
- Estimated scenes, then real ones. In the storyboard, each scene estimates its length from word count. Once the voice arrives, the length becomes that of the audio file, not the estimate.
- Checked master. The master's technical check requires its length to match the sum of the scenes.
- After publishing. With the video linked and checked against YouTube, and your Google account connected (the channel's own), the studio stores the daily value of average view duration and average percentage viewed.
What it does not do: it does not decide for you how long a video should be, it does not warn you that a master goes over 15 minutes, and it does not store the retention curve; that curve is viewed in YouTube Studio. The upload is also yours: the studio does not publish to your channel on its own.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum length of a YouTube video?
Without verifying the channel, you can by default upload videos of up to 15 minutes. With a verified account, the limit is 256 GB or 12 hours of total length, whichever is less.
How long does a video have to be to monetise?
Length is not a requirement to join the YouTube Partner Program, which measures subscribers and watch hours or Shorts views. Where it does count is for mid-roll ads, which can be turned on for monetised videos of 8 minutes or more.
Is there an ideal length for a YouTube video?
Not a universal figure. YouTube advises that the length should suit the content and recommends using audience retention data to adjust the length of your videos.
How long can a Short be?
Up to 3 minutes, with a square or vertical aspect ratio.
How does the Estudio de Canales work out a video's length?
It starts from the target length in the bible or the series and writes the script for that length, with a benchmark of about 150 words per minute. Once the voice arrives, each scene lasts as long as its audio, and the master is checked against the sum of the scenes.
