Online teleprompter for recording your voice-over

An online teleprompter is a tool that shows on screen, in large type, the text you are going to read while you record, with nothing to install: it works in the browser. To record a voice-over that is all you need, a large, well-prepared text in front of your eyes; if you also appear on camera, you need the text to sit next to the lens so you do not look away.
What a teleprompter is
A teleprompter is a system that shows the text the speaker has to read, so that they can read it naturally without looking down at a sheet of paper. It is what news presenters use to look into the camera while they read.
There are two families:
- The camera teleprompter: a screen placed under an angled pane of glass in front of the lens. The glass reflects the text towards the speaker and lets the image through to the camera, so the person reads while looking at the lens.
- The software teleprompter: a program or website that shows the text on a screen, with adjustable type size and, sometimes, scrolling speed. It can be a tablet app, a PC program or an online teleprompter in the browser.
To record a voice-over, which is the voice of a narrator who does not appear on screen, you need neither glass nor a mount: nobody sees you, so it does not matter where you look. What matters is reading comfortably, with large text and without losing your rhythm.
Online, PC or camera: which one you need
| If you are going to… | All you need is | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| Record voice only | An online or PC teleprompter, on whatever screen you have. | Large type, good contrast and being able to record in segments. |
| Record yourself with a webcam | An online teleprompter with a camera, or a program that places the text near the webcam. | The text sitting right below the camera: the further away it is, the more obvious it is that you are reading. |
| Record with a video camera | A camera teleprompter, with glass, and a tablet or screen. | A mount that fits the lens and being able to control the speed. |
An online teleprompter that records in the browser will ask for permission to use the microphone, and the camera if it also records video: the browser asks the user for permissions before giving access to those devices. If you deny it, the site will not be able to record until you change that permission in your browser's site settings.
How to prepare the text so it reads well
A teleprompter does not fix a text written to be read silently. Before loading it:
- Short sentences, one idea per sentence. Long subordinate clauses force you to take a breath in the middle of an idea.
- Figures, acronyms and names written as they are pronounced. “Nineteen hundred” rather than a number that makes you hesitate out loud.
- Marked pauses. A line break where you want to breathe and a full stop where you want to pause.
- Short blocks. Split the text into segments of a few sentences, which you can record in one go and repeat without redoing everything.
- One read-through aloud before recording. Where you stumble, change the text, not the way you read it.
If the text is a video script, there are more guidelines for writing for the ear in how to write a script for YouTube.
How to record a voice-over with a teleprompter
The technique is simple, and what makes the difference is consistency:
- Prepare the space. A small room with soft furnishings sounds better than a large, empty one, and the microphone should always be at the same distance. There is more detail in voice-over with AI or your own voice.
- Adjust the teleprompter to you, not the other way round. If the text scrolls, set the speed to your natural pace; if it does not scroll, make the segment fit entirely on screen.
- Record in segments. One block per take. If you make a mistake, repeat the whole block: splices in the middle of a sentence show.
- Read as if you were telling it to someone. Looking at the text does not oblige you to sound as if you are reading: smile on the friendly sentences, slow down on the important ones.
- Compare the length with the expected one. If one take lasts much longer than the others, you have probably read more slowly than you think.
- Listen before saving. Loud breaths, noises or stumbled words are better fixed by repeating the take than by editing.
A channel that shows nobody relies on its voice-over; if that is your case, see how to set up a YouTube channel without showing your face.
Common mistakes when reading with a teleprompter
- Small type or long lines. They force you to move your eyes from side to side and it shows in your voice.
- A fixed speed that is too fast. You end up chasing the text instead of telling it.
- Improvising on the text without noting it down. If you change words as you read, the written text and the voice stop matching, and so do any subtitles generated from the text. Either you read what it says, or you correct the text. We explain it in subtitles for YouTube.
- Recording everything in one go. A mistake at the end forces you to repeat the beginning.
- Not rehearsing difficult names. Look up how they are pronounced before recording, not during.
The Estudio de Canales teleprompter: what it does and does not do
In the Estudio de Canales, each scene's voice can be an AI voice or your own, and for your own there is a built-in teleprompter. This is how it works:
- Scene by scene. In each scene you can upload your recording or record it in the browser with a teleprompter that shows you the text in large type.
- The text is the scene's narration. Before recording, the scene has to have written narration, and that narration comes, word for word, from the approved script, although you can edit it scene by scene.
- Short takes. Each recording has to last between half a second and two minutes; if it goes beyond that, you need to split the scene or trim the recording.
- If you already have the recording, you upload it as WAV, MP3, M4A, OGG or WEBM.
- Your recording sets the timing. The real length of your recording becomes the scene's length, and your voice has no AI provider or cost.
- Tied to the text. If the scene's narration changes afterwards, the review asks you to record it again, so that voice and subtitles do not drift apart.
What it does not do: it does not record video or use the camera, because it is designed for voice-over; it does not clone voices, because the voice is that of an AI narrator or your own, recorded by you; and it is not a general-purpose teleprompter for any text, but the one for the narration of each scene in your videos. Nor does it publish: you download the package and upload it yourself in YouTube Studio.

Frequently asked questions
What is a teleprompter?
A system that shows the text the speaker has to read so that they can read it without looking down at a sheet of paper. A camera teleprompter uses a pane of glass in front of the lens; a software one is a program or website that shows the text on a screen.
What teleprompter do I need to record a voice-over?
A simple one: an online or PC teleprompter on whatever screen you have, with large type and good contrast. Since nobody sees you, you do not need a glass pane or a camera mount.
Why does the online teleprompter ask for permission to use the microphone?
Because the browser asks the user for permission before giving access to a microphone or a camera. If you deny it, the site will not be able to record until you change that permission in your browser's site settings.
What is the Estudio de Canales teleprompter like?
It is inside each scene: you can record your voice in the browser with a teleprompter that shows you the text in large type, or upload a recording. It records voice only, not video, and if the scene's narration changes afterwards, the review asks you to record it again.
