When choosing among YouTube channel names, think about two pieces at once: the channel name, which is how the channel presents itself, and the handle, the @ name that is unique and becomes the channel's address (youtube.com/@…). A good name is understood at first sight, says what the channel is about or who runs it, can be written without hesitation and does not tie you to a format you may drop. Before deciding, check that the handle is available and that there is not already a channel with an almost identical name on your topic.

Name and handle: two different pieces

For YouTube, handles are different from channel names. It helps to be clear about the difference before choosing:

Channel nameHandle (@)
What it isThe name the channel presents itself with.A short, unique channel identifier that starts with @.
Where it showsOn YouTube. Changing it does not change your Google account name.In comments, mentions, live chat and Shorts, and in the channel URL: youtube.com/@yourhandle.
How often it can be changedTwice every 14 days.Twice every 14 days.
Watch out forChanging it removes the verification badge.Changing it does not remove the badge; the previous one is reserved for 14 days.

The practical thing is for them to look alike. If the channel is called one thing and the handle something very different, someone who hears you in a video and searches for you afterwards has two things to remember. On YouTube you can search for a channel by typing @ followed by its handle, and you can also use the handle outside YouTube to promote the channel: it is the address you will put on your website, on your social media or on a card.

Criteria for choosing a good name

YouTube's help page gives a general pointer: use a unique channel name or a handle that represents who you are and the type of content you publish. From there, these criteria rule out most of the bad options:

  • It can be said and written without hesitation. If you have to spell it out, you lose part of the people who hear it. Beware of little-known foreign words, double letters and wordplay that only works in writing.
  • It says what it is about or who is behind it. The topic (cooking, history, DIY), the approach (for beginners, in a few minutes) or your own name, if the person is the channel.
  • It does not box you in. A year, a number or a very specific format in the name ages badly: a channel called “Weekly Top 10” stays tied to lists even if one day you want to do something else.
  • It is short. It can be read in full on a phone screen and fits in the handle without being cut.
  • It stands out. If there is already a channel with an almost identical name on your topic, yours will be confused with it.
  • It fits the visual identity. The name is the starting point of the channel's brand, which is completed with visual elements such as the banner image and the profile picture. You will find it in YouTube banner: size, profile picture and trailer.

If the channel is for a business, the logical thing is to start from the brand name, perhaps with the topic next to it; there are more criteria in YouTube channel for businesses.

How to come up with name ideas without filler lists

Lists of “a hundred names for your channel” are of little use: names that work come from what is distinctive about your channel. A method that fits in an afternoon:

  1. Write three columns: the topic (words from your niche), the approach or tone (how you tell it) and what is your own (your name, your city, your trade, an expression of yours).
  2. Combine words from two columns until you have around twenty candidates.
  3. Filter with the criteria above and keep three or four.
  4. Ask four or five people from your audience what they would expect to see on a channel with each name. If what they answer is similar to what you are going to publish, you are on track.

For example, for an invented channel about railway history, this is how four candidates read:

Name (example)What it conveysRisk
Tracks and StationsClear topic and a storytelling tone.Little, as long as the channel does not stray from trains.
Trains in Five MinutesShort, explainer format. It ties you to a length you may want to change.
Platform ThreePersonality, sounds like a proper name.It does not say the topic until you explain it.
Top 10 TrainsLists.Generic and tied to a format.

If you are not yet clear about what the channel will be about, start there: the name comes much more easily when you know which topics can fill many videos. Ideas for a YouTube channel: how to find and validate them will help.

The rules for the handle (@)

The handle has its own rules. According to YouTube's help page, it has to:

  • Be between 3 and 30 characters long, with other limits in some alphabets.
  • Use numbers or letters from the alphabet of one of the 75 available languages, Spanish among them. It is not case-sensitive.
  • Include, if you wish, underscores (_), hyphens (-), periods (.) and middle dots (·), but not at the start or the end.
  • Not look like a URL or a phone number.
  • Not be already taken by another channel and follow the Community Guidelines.

YouTube does not allow handles that are violent, offensive or have misleading content, nor the sale and transfer of handles, and each channel can only have one. If the one you want is not available, the help page suggests trying to add periods, numbers or underscores. And if YouTube assigned you one automatically when you created the channel, you can see and edit it in YouTube Studio or at youtube.com/handle. The steps for creating the channel are in how to create a YouTube channel.

A tip for channels in Spanish: if the handle includes characters other than the letters A to Z, the numbers 0 to 9 or separators, such as an accent or an ñ, people searching for you may find it hard to type without the right keyboard, and some websites or apps may not display the link properly. That is why, for a Spanish-language channel called “Vías y estaciones”, “@viasyestaciones”, without an accent, causes fewer problems than “@víasyestaciones”.

Checks before you decide

  1. Search for it on YouTube, with and without @, and see whether there are channels with similar names on your topic.
  2. Search for it on Google. If the first thing that comes up is a well-known brand, another channel or something you do not want to be associated with, keep looking.
  3. Say it out loud and ask someone to write it down as they hear it. If they spell it wrong, so will anyone who hears you in a video.
  4. See whether it is free outside YouTube: the web domain and the same name on the social networks where you will be present.
  5. If it will be a business's brand, check that it does not clash with a registered trademark before investing in it.
  6. Test it at a small size: write it next to a profile picture the size of a comment and see whether it is recognisable.

How to change the name or the handle

Both are changed in YouTube Studio, under Customization > Profile: you type the new one and click Publish. What it helps to know beforehand:

  • Name: you can change it twice every 14 days, and it may take a few days to update and appear on YouTube. If the channel is verified, the change removes the badge and you have to submit the request again. Changing the channel name does not change your Google account name, and vice versa. If it will not let you change it, first delete the translations of the channel name.
  • Handle: also twice every 14 days. YouTube reserves the previous one for 14 days in case you want to use it again, and during that period both the old and the new URL work. After that, the previous handle becomes available to other users. Changing the handle does not remove the verification badge.

Before changing the handle of a channel that already has an audience, make a list of where you have put the old address (your website, your profiles, your video descriptions) and change it within those 14 days: after that, another channel can take it.

The channel name in the Estudio de Canales

The Estudio de Canales does not suggest channel names or check whether a handle is available: that is decided and checked on YouTube. What it does do with the name:

  • It stores it in the bible. The channel name is a field in the bible's identity, alongside the description, the niche, the language, the country and the target audience. The AI receives the channel name and its bible when it suggests ideas, and the bible when it prepares the script.
  • It does not depend on the name to follow your channel. If you link the channel by its public ID, the studio stores that ID, the one starting with “UC”, and not the name or the handle.
  • Changing it in the studio does not change it on YouTube. The change is saved in the studio, which does not publish anything to your channel on its own: on YouTube you change it yourself, as explained above.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the channel name and the handle?

The name is what the channel presents itself with. The handle is a short, unique channel identifier that starts with @, appears in comments and mentions and serves as the channel's URL (youtube.com/@…). Each channel can only have one.

How many times can I change my YouTube channel name?

Twice every 14 days, from YouTube Studio, under Customization > Profile. It can take a few days to show, and if the channel has the verification badge, the change removes it.

What happens to my previous handle if I change it?

YouTube reserves it for 14 days in case you want to use it again, and during that period both the old and the new URL work. After that it becomes available to other users.

Can I use accents or an ñ in the handle?

The handle accepts letters from the available languages, Spanish among them. But with characters other than A to Z it can be hard to type, and some websites or apps may not display the link properly, so it causes fewer problems without accents or an ñ.

Does the Estudio de Canales suggest a channel name for me?

No. You choose the name and check it on YouTube. The studio stores it in the channel bible and the AI receives it, along with the bible, when it suggests ideas.
